The Longest Sleep

Yesterday I went to bed around 1 AM and woke up about 5:45. PM, that is. That makes for almost 17 hours of nearly uninterrupted sleep. That beats my old record, set as a college freshman, that was brought to an end when a friend woke me up to go to dinner. (You know who you are...that DO!)

So I decided to search the web for the world record of the longest sleep, and have only come up with 14 and a half days, set by Randy Gardiner in 1965. But considering only 1 person wrote 2 sentences about him on the entire WWW-- and the second sentence doesn't even make sense to me-- I'm not sure how reliable that information is. In related news, the world's longest hypnotic sleep is 8 continuous days, set by Peter Powers, who also holds the world record as the fastest hypnotist.

But the most scientifically reliable tidbit I found during my search was this person's answer to a forum entitled "How long was your longest sleep?":
My longest sleep is coming soon, I'm 66 years old and I was a heavy smoker for 50 years.

Comments:
I just slept through Easter. I went to sleep approximately 2am Sunday morning. Woke up at 6:12am and thought I was going to stay up all morning. I went back to sleep around 8:30am and didn't awake until 12:30pm Monday (today). I just searched for records as well because 32.5 total hrs, 26.5 continuous, is definitely a record for me. Now all I have to do is make it up to my girlfriend who was locked out and couldn't wake me. Also her brother and sister in-law who were counting on us to arrive for dinner. Sleep on.

Hey man,

Randy Gardner didn't set the record for the "longest sleep." He set the record for the longest time WITHOUT sleeping. (And the record, 11 days, was just broken by Tony Wright over the summer). I'm curious to know the record for the "longest sleep" myself, though...

I searched for "longest sleep" on google and came across this site. I went to bed last night at 11pm and my girlfriend came over and woke me up at 5:45pm. I had to pee like a race horse! My college roommate slept 38 hours once with the aid of an oxygen mask - as close as it gets to Rip VanWinkle.

On other notes, myself and some friends stayed up for a week straight and after the 3rd night I don't remember being drowsy, just very squirrely, not much coffee either. In fact, I remember struggling to fall asleep.

that randy gardner is the one who holds the world record of the longest time without sleep (264h)

xx

Last night I suddenly got REALLY tired, for no reason (I've been having regular 8 hour sleeps for the past week) and decided to have a nap. I went to have a nap at about 8pm (Thursday night), and woke up 2pm (Friday afternoon). It was a very intense Lucid dream as well, and it felt like I was in my dream for only about 2 hours.

18 hours is my personal record of uninterrupted sleep, and I've only ever slept this long in a Lucid dream, too. The thing that surprised me the most is how I had been getting normal sleep for the past couple weeks, and all of a sudden I got really tired and had this dream for 18 hours.

i can any sleeping recoard ever with this drug im takeing called seroquel i can sleep 48 strate and do on my day's off from work.

Maybe instead of sleeping for 48 hours you should learn how to write english that is grammatically correct and has no spelling mistakes?

I just recorded a 23 + hour sleep.. was upser about it and seaching the internet what would cause that.. i was not drunk.. not even a beer... 10/05/08 5.0x AM to 10/06/08 4.34 AM... kinda strange... screw up my sunday plans..

my boyfriend slept for 19 hours straight last week after he had had only a combined six hours of sleep in the previous two days. He slept from 3:30 PM on Thursday until 10:30 AM on Friday.

Yall lightweight just giv up i bein a a normal 14 year old can get round maybe 30 or more odd hours on the weekend example after baseball come home go to bed round 8pf FRi wake up sunday roun 1 just to watch wat sprots r on mmmmm :)

My longest sleep was 20 hours, and I felt I coulda slept even longer. Working over night at a grocery store, I stayed up during the day often and only got about 4-5 hours sleep before work. So for my 2 days off I would easily sleep about 11-12 hours average. One time I didn't sleep for 2 days. It's not like they work me that hard, I just like to stay up! And K.O!

hey anonymous,(3 after sleep-lover),maybe you should just be silent and dont talk about people, when i bet that person is smarter than you, what do you do?night school at the community college down the street from wal-mart?not so smart are you now?

Hey Anonymous ,that is making fun of the guy that mad fun of the guy that misspelled, I go to a community college and i bet i am smarter then you. I got a 31 on the ACT good enough score to get into Harvard. I just did not have the opportunity( money, scholarships, etc.). So pretty much(read backwards, "if you can") UOY KCUF. So all in all there is nothing wrong with a community college. You probably went to a state school and work at a Walmart. That's pretty much it.

I didn't actually read through all of the responses, (I'm still a little sleepy) but I just woke up at 11:24am today 6/1/09 and I fell asleep at 10:12am yesterday 5/31/09. That's a total of 25 hrs. 12 min!!!! I was trying to look up the World Record for the Longest Un-Assisted Sleep, but couldn't really find anything. Anyone know what it is? (if there is one) :)

31 on an ACT and you didn't get any scholarships? I think you're BSing.

even if you DID get a 31 on your act, that doesn't mean you'll get into any ivy league. Despite what you may think, schools look at other things such as extra curriculars, gpa, class rank, and difficulty of classes. So even If you got a 31, that doesn't automatically mean you van choose what ever school you want. And 31 is just average for those great schools...hate to break it to you! Even notre dame turns away students every year that got a perfect score. So you do the math. Notre dame is not as good as harvard, and yet it turns down perfect act scores. I'm sure that harvard does the same. So don't act like you're the smartest person ever just because you did good on your ACT. Besides, the important thing is that you attended a school that you really liked, even if it was a community college. The important thing is that you're happy.

As a student my best is 15 hours on the weekend. The others seem almost impossible!!

My record is 22 hours of uniterrupeted sleep. But my brother slept for 2 days straight with only 2 interuptions (cuz he was hungry). He fell asleep Sunday morning and woke up Tuesday afternoon ate then went back tp bed he's sleeping right now lol

I do work at night time,so I do strugle with sleeping at day time, sometimes I stay awake for 30-40 hours, but then my ears get late on the noises around me,i see people speaking like in a badly dubbed asian karate movie... and then I sleep for straight 26 hours(average),during the sleep, sometimes I speak on the phone if someone calls me,but I cant remember anything when I wake up,some friends think I'm joking, but I'm not... By the way,3 years ago I found out, that I have a Sexomnia... really strange thing,to wake up while having sex...

P.s If there are life forms such as "Ants" which never sleep, there should be some forms of life that never wake up...

Yeah, I had a 34 on the ACT (just .25 away from a 35!!!), and a 1600 on the SAT, and I still did not get into *any* Ivy league schools. So yeah, they look at other stuff. But my record is 16 hours, and I met this guy who claimed to sleep 20 hours nonstop, and I did not believe him, but did not say anything. But just today he went to sleep and woke up after 5 PM (>18 hours), so I decided to see what the world record is, but cannot find it. Anyone have a clue?

I fell asleep 3pm Monday, July 6th, and woke up at noon Tuesday, July 7th.
21 hours! That's my record so far =]

I stayed up a past three nights without a wink of sleep and then when I went to sleep last night. I pulled 18 and a half uninterrupted and then made my way to the bathroom for about a 45 second round trip and was back asleep in less than five minutes for another 7 hours.

It...was...awesome

As a 13 year old coming home after on surgery on 2pm Tuesday, I slept and next woke up at 11am Thursday.

45 hours, but kind of cheating.

I had been trying to get myself back on a normal sleep schedule and i woke up at 5am tuesday, went to sleep at around 30 minutes after midnight and ended up sleeping until 11:30pm wednesday, 23 hours with vivid dreams.

My record for longest sleep is a month! I just wolk up today and man am i refreshed. I went to sleep around 9:30 a.m September 30th and I just wolk up today, 7:46 October 30th.

Im 21 and just woke up :p

Anon 10:16, that's the best comment yet! I don't know what was going on with all the test score nonsense, but it's definitely been interesting reading about everyone else's sleep escapades. Hey, are there any paying jobs out there that require excellent sleep skills? I'd be first in line.

This is like my 4th week in a row where iv gone to sleep at 6 am and woke up at 5 pm the next day. Getting boring now.

Gonna see how long I can last not sleeping, First night over :D

Yesterday (well, technically today), I fell asleep at around 12:30 AM, and I woke up today at 3PM. Definitely beats my old record of 1:30 PM. I suppose it was because I have been sleeping at 12 or 1 AM this past week, and my body was just catching up.

The anonymous five below sanjaya, if you scored a 31 on your ACTS! Then Harvard probably would have helped you achieve full scholarship. Don't lie and waste our time. You are dumb, just admit it. And Sasha if you scored that high, most schools would review you as a possible candidate for there college. My grandfather is the dean of Cornell, and yes that is an IVY league school. I know everything about entering IVY league schools, and all of you are BULLSHIT LIARS!

Some say we still haven't woke up.

my buddy went to sleep on my couch at about 11pm. woke him up at 9, en i got up. he went to the bathroom, then immediately fell asleep in my bed, where he still is sleeping now. going on about 31 hours now.... i'm trying to stay awake myself just to see how long he sleeps! anyways hard to find results for longest sleep record without finding sleep deprivation records. i'll update if i am awake when he wakes up. (he's snoring so i know he's not dead)

I just slept 42 hours straight :)

Your post is great. I found you by searching for the answer to the same question you asked: longest sleeper. But what I was really looking to find out was who needed the longest sleep? In other words, who slept 23 out of every 24 hours, or something like that. I had been wondering how bears developed a tendency to hibernate. Somewhere along the line, a bear liked to sleep for huge periods, and he had lots of cubs? Anyway, this led me to wonder if some human was doing something similar, and if he might birth a race of hibernating humans. Love your ending to the post. Very funny!

That randy guy didnt sleep for 11 days i'm going to brake his record. I'm going for 13 days without any kind of energy drink or caffein. when I brake the record you will see my pic in the book of world records.

Well i'm your regular lazy teenage boy 14 yrs and yeah i want to say ive slept for 36 hrs as my record and umm whats the record i'd be happy to break it and uhh whats the longest msn chat causse thats basically what makes me so tired you talk to the same girl for 3 months 18hrs at a time you fall asleep wake up 1 days l8r with the phone ringing and its her asking if you died because she can sleep 4 hrs and be fine and your just like ............WHAT THE HELL MAN.

ive heard that sleep deprivation causes brain damage but umm im not seeing signs of it yet im going for some kinda hibernation here im at 17 hrs no sleep already im dooin alright 2L of coca cola and yeah im good to go. also is there a way not to have troubles falling asleep after 3 days wich is my record for time awake i did it last summer but then my mom took me to the hospital and got me a perscription for sleeping pills because sleep deprivation supposabley causes brain damage. I WISH THE WORLD HAD MORE THREADS LIKE THIS :P =P -.-

I get 8 - 9 hrs of sleep every night but on the weekends I sleep for 18 - 20 hrs straight. It makes no sense.

I have you all beat I have slept upto 72 hrs + this past weekend I slept for 30 hrs. Tuesday I slept for 20hrs.
Back in 07 I slept through an entire week of school. I have the Dr. Note to prove it. I have an official case of KLS and I am very well known for sleeping from Saturday until Monday. I'm going to try and set an official record. Granted when I sleep for that long I wake up and realize I ate bizarre food and usually find I have no food in my house as I wake up and eat in my sleep with out memory. Again proven medically and can provide dr note. Lol I just figure I'll turn disorder into famous world record some how. Back to sleep for me won't wake up until Tuesday most likely. Sweet lucid dreams for me.

Ps this is 100% truth. I go to BI in Boston and MGH for hormonal research and other studies.

My longest sleep was 18 hours and 3 minutes. It started at 3pm of thursday afternoon and I woke up at 9:03am of a Friday morning.

20 Hours. After a company meeting, staying awake all night to finish my project, i got eating chinese with my collegues and at 4:15 PM i got home and went to sleep. i woke up the next day at 12:45 PM.

Any tips on how to sleep 40+ hours? I love sleep so much I want to devote a couple of days to it lol

Seriously.. Pftt such a lie. Not possible to sleep one month

i remember going to sleep about 3 am Saturday and woke up this morning feeling rather refreshed.I looked at the clock thinking that i only slept about 6 hours. I though it was odd that i didn't feel to tired for that short amount of sleep. later on when i sat down to watch lol Sunday , i had then realized that it was in fact Monday. I am, still in shock that i slept through an entire day. totaling about 32 hours of straight sleep

You actually didn't have one dream.

Everyone cycles between deep sleep and REM sleep which is the kind that has dreams.

No matter how well trained at lucid dreaming you are, you will conform to a sleep cycle of some kind.

I suspect that the lucid dream you mention is only the one closest to when you woke up.

Since the vast majority of time spent sleeping is in non-REM sleep, and since deep sleep is a process of synapse pruning (which means forgetting in essence), most people tend to only remember the dreams they had that were temporally close to waking up.

I am 15 years old and after my football game on Friday I can easily sleep 2-3 days. One time i ended up skipping school on monday because i was still sleeping from friday. I normally only wake up once or twice in order to feed myself. zit really throws off my schedule though because i dont really dream and end up thinking its still saturday.

Lol look at the times of all the post's :D

I slept 19 hours and 21 mins yesterday and about 2 months ago I slept 33 hours and 43 mins which happens when you work 12 days straight without a day off. I'm 25 and am a manager of a sales office which is exhausting and stressful on it's own. I try to get 12 hours of sleep each night but it usually turns into 2.5 hours. Each of the longest times I have slept I never once woke up to use the bathroom (thanks to my dad's genes, I can hold it forever) or even eat so I slept without waking up once. One of my employees suggested I should look up the world record but I keep finding all different answers :/ do we have a definite answer?

I sleep 12-14 hours on a regular basis but idk if that's hibernation

I hope you have a full non stop recording or a judge in front of you to prove that statement

Why is it that 90% of the people posting comments here don’t know English?

32 hours easy
